Engineering students have made roof tiles that break down pollutants when exposed to sunlight
Titanium dioxide breaks down smog particles in the air, and students in the US have shown that in one year, one roof coated in it can break down the smog from a car that's driven 17,000 km. And every day, 21 tonnes of smog could be eliminated by one million treated roofs. read more

ReplyDeleteI think this is cool, but if it is US students, maybe put a conversion that most Americans besides us science freaks would understand. Most don't understand 17,000km and 21 tonnes
ReplyDeleteI suppose a natural followup question would be how environmentally friendly and sustainable the actual production of TiO2 and these tiles is.
ReplyDeletePlants and trees do the same thing and cost less too. They are also excellent for our environment. Hint, hint!
ReplyDeleteNothing in the article to suggest wether the chemical reaction takes place due to the coating deteriorating and combining with the smog particles or if it is a continuous reaction with no effect to the coating at all.
ReplyDeleteThe question is how many times would you have to coat your roof every year.
I bet it's more than once & I bet it will be too much of a hassle to maintain.
